最終回となるこのコラムでは、私が「教室を続けていくために」大切にしていることを綴ります。続けるという行為は、誰かに教えていただくものではなく、自らの足で歩み続けることそのものなのだと、年を重ねるほど強く感じます。

In this final column, I'd like to share what I cherish most about continuing to teach. To continue, I have come to feel, is something no one can give to you — it is, simply, the act of walking with your own feet, year after year.

講師であり続けるための、学び

A Teacher Must Keep Learning

私が最も大切にしているのは、「講師である私自身がお勉強を続けていくこと」です。華道を始めて10年以上経った今も、月3回のお稽古に欠かさず通っていますし、パリのフラワーレッスンに参加し、フランスの最新のトレンドを学ぶ機会も大切にしています。先を歩く存在でいなくては、生徒さんに追い越されてしまう——そうした緊張感が、私を学びへと引き戻し続けてくれます。

What I cherish most is continuing my own study, even as a teacher. More than a decade after I began ikebana, I still attend my three monthly lessons without fail. I also travel to Paris to take flower lessons and keep absorbing what is unfolding in France. A teacher must walk a little ahead — otherwise students will pass you. That quiet pressure has always brought me back to learning.

作品の完成度と、地道な歩み

Craftsmanship and the Slow Path

集客に近道はありません。作品の完成度を上げ、自分のセンスを磨いていくこと——その地道な営みが、結局はいちばん遠くまで連れていってくれます。そして自分の強みを見極めること。私の場合は「親しみやすさ」だと思っています。それを生かした教室運営を、これからも続けていきたいのです。

There are no shortcuts to gathering students. Quietly raising the quality of one's work and deepening one's eye — that steady practice carries you the furthest in the end. Knowing one's strength is just as essential. For me, that strength is approachability. I want to keep building the studio around it, gently and unhurriedly.

What Students Truly Seek

毎年1月、私は生徒さんお一人おひとりに「今年はどんなふうにお花を楽しみたいですか？」とお伺いするようにしています。楽しむことを目的にされる方、ディプロマコースで本格的に学びたい方——求めているものは人それぞれです。そのお声をきちんと聞くこと。それが、長く続くお教室の秘訣だと信じています。

Every January, I quietly ask each student, "How would you like to enjoy flowers this year?" Some come simply to relax; others wish to pursue a formal diploma. What each person seeks is different. Listening carefully — that, I believe, is the quiet secret of an enduring studio.
