フレッシュフラワーでもプリザーブドフラワーでも、私が一番最初に大切にしているのは「テーマを決める」こと。テーマがあれば、選ぶ花も、形も、色も、自然と寄り添ってくれるのです。

Whether working with fresh or preserved flowers, the very first thing I cherish is choosing a theme. With a theme in mind, the blooms, the shape, the colors — all of them quietly begin to align.

すべてのアレンジには「テーマ」がある

Every Arrangement Begins with a Theme

クリスマス、バレンタインデー、母の日、ハロウィン——季節のイベントは、もっとも基本となるテーマです。けれど大切なのは、「毎年同じ」にしないこと。私のお教室では、定番アレンジメントと、他では見ないオリジナルアレンジメントを毎年交互に組み合わせて、生徒さんが何度通っても新しい発見があるよう工夫しています。

Christmas, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Halloween — seasonal events are the most natural themes to begin with. What matters, though, is to avoid repeating the same arrangement each year. At my studio, I alternate between classics and originals you wouldn't find elsewhere, so that returning students always meet something fresh.

Weaving a Story Into the Work

テーマをただイベントに合わせるだけでは、どこか平凡な仕上がりになってしまいます。そこに「ストーリー」を織り込むこと——これが、唯一無二のアレンジメントを生む鍵です。たとえば、「男性が大切な人に贈るために、片手で持って歩きやすいブーケ」。シーンを具体的に思い描くと、花の選び方も、丈の長さも、リボンの色も、自然と決まっていきます。

Matching a theme to an occasion is not enough — the result can feel ordinary. Weaving a story is what makes an arrangement truly singular. Imagine, for example, "a bouquet for a man to carry in one hand, on his way to give it to someone he loves." When the scene is vivid, the flowers, the stem length, even the ribbon — all of these settle into place on their own.

テーマがあれば、花は迷わない。

日常のなかから、テーマを拾う

Finding Themes in Everyday Life

特別な行事だけがテーマではありません。「雨上がりの朝に窓辺に飾りたい」「久しぶりに会う友人を玄関で迎えるための一輪」——日常の小さなシーンこそ、いちばん豊かなテーマの宝庫です。次回は、テーマが決まったあとの「花材の選び方」について、お話ししたいと思います。

Special occasions are not the only themes. "A vase for the windowsill on a morning after rain." "A single bloom to greet an old friend at the door." The small scenes of daily life are perhaps the richest source of themes. In the next column, I'd like to share how I choose flowers once a theme is set.
