To those preparing to open a studio, and to those who have started but feel uncertain about the road ahead — I share my own steps in the hope that something here may quietly resonate.

「教室を始めるぞ」とは思っていなかった

It Wasn't a Sudden Decision

最初から「教室をやろう」と決めていたわけではありませんでした。長く華道を続けるうちに、「もっとたくさんの方にお華を知ってほしい」という気持ちが、私のなかでゆっくりと膨らんでいったのです。華展に立ち、参加者が年々減っていく現状を目の当たりにしたとき、20年後・30年後の華道はどうなっているのだろうと胸が痛みました。

I never planned from the start to open a studio. After years of practising ikebana, the wish to share its beauty with more people gradually took root inside me. Standing at exhibitions and watching participants slowly decline year by year, I began to wonder what ikebana would look like twenty, thirty years from now. That ache became the seed of action.

結婚を機に、踏み出した最初の一歩

A Marriage, and the First Step Forward

結婚を機に会社員を辞めたことが、教室準備の大きな転機となりました。学生時代の公文や英会話の講師の経験もあり、「教える」という行為は私にとって自然なものでした。最初は知人のエステサロンの一角をお借りして、月3回のレッスンからスタート。生徒さんと向き合う時間が、私自身の学びの時間でもありました。

My marriage and the decision to leave my company role marked a real turning point. From earlier years tutoring at Kumon and teaching English, the act of teaching was already familiar. I began modestly — three monthly lessons in a corner of a friend's salon. Each hour with my students became, in turn, an hour of learning for me.

華道とプリザーブドの両輪を持つ

華道だけでは生徒さんが集まりにくいかもしれない——そう感じた私は、対極にあるプリザーブドフラワーの資格取得を決意しました。約10年前に出会ったこの分野で、感性の優れた教室に通い、協会員となるまでに。日本の伝統と、洋花の華やかさ。この二つの軸をもつことが、その後のサロン運営の自由度を大きく広げてくれました。

Ikebana alone, I sensed, might not gather enough students. So I chose to study its very opposite — preserved flowers. About a decade ago, I found a teacher of great sensibility and progressed all the way to becoming a certified member of the association. Holding both Japanese tradition and the brightness of Western blooms gave the atelier its eventual freedom to grow.

サロンの誕生

The Birth of the Salon

借家暮らしのあいだは限定的な活動にとどまっていましたが、ブログやSNSを通じてオリジナルデザインを少しずつ広げていきました。そして2010年末、新居の一室をサロンとして設計し、本格的な歩みが始まりました。あの日決めた小さな間取り図が、いま思えば今日のすべての始まりです。

While renting, my activity remained quiet and limited. But through a blog and social media, my original designs slowly began to find their way to others. At the end of 2010, I designed one room in our new home as the salon — and that quiet floor plan became, in hindsight, the beginning of everything.
